Harbour pier - scratchbuilding project(photos shown in date order, latest last)
01 December 2002:
I finally made a start to my harbour pier!! Here is the bare stripwood, ready to be stained. It is easier to stain the wood before cutting it - having a few bits to stain is a lot less time consuming than a lot of small pieces! I will do the cutting once the wood has all been stained.
01 December 2002:
The stain I am using is called 'Dark Oak' which is a nice dark brown, and also brings out the grain in the wood, resulting in a nice realistic colour and texture
01 December 2002:
To stain the wood I poured some stain onto a clean dry cloth and used this to rub the stain onto the wood. I folded the cloth around the wood so I could do stain two sides at the same time, which makes the work go a bit quicker

Here is the wood after staining. There are still a few light bits showing through (which makes the grain stand out) but these will be less obvious after a bit of weathering
I'll be adding more photos as the project
progresses, so be sure to check back now and then - also keep
an eye on my 'Projects' page
for construction updates.
