Okay, here is a brief run-down of what my layout is going to be like.
It is based on a track plan featured in the August 1997 Model Railroader,
The Port Kelsey Railway, modelled by Tim Warris. It is a small HO
scale industrial waterfront switching layout, the only size suitable
for our room.

The layout as it appears in Model Railroader is 2ft x 10ft - unfortunately
due to lack of space at the moment I have to build the layout in phases
- as I get more space I will build another phase of the layout. Phase
1 is labelled on the layout diagram below. This phase is 2ft x 4ft
(60cm x 121cm) - small, but this will enable me to add as much detail
as possible, since I only have a small area to concentrate on - this
first phase incorporates the harbour area.
The reason I chose this layout was mainly due to the fact that it
comprised of all the elements I was looking for in a model railroad
- a waterfront scene, industrial switching and a small loco service
facility. It is expandable in the future as it has a mainline track
running through the middle, ending at the edges of the layout.
Tim Warris showed what is possible on a small layout - if any of you
have seen this feature you will have seen how he managed to pack quite
a few buildings and track into a small space, as it is not very wide.
His photos showed just can be done, and I like the idea of having
something small, meaning that I can concentrate on the detailing,
which I consider the fun part ...
Check back soon to see how the Paliz Bay Railway & Navigation Co.
layout is progressing. |
